Britain Day

Do you think creating Britain Day is a good idea?

Ministers are proposing plans for a new bank holiday called Britain Day in order to "celebrate the contribution we all make to society". Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly also suggested immigrants could have the opportunity to "earn" citizenship. It is hoped the new day would strengthen Britain's communities and help celebrate the achievements of local groups.

Is Britain Day a good idea? Do we need to have a day off in order to strengthen our community spirit or are social problems too deep-rooted to be solved by having a lie in? And if we did get a day off, what historical British event should we hang it around, the abolition of slavery, the Queen's birthday, VE Day?
