Playstation 3 - The Facts

It’s the most eagerly awaited console launch since, well, PlayStation 2. With Microsoft’s Xbox 360 already on sale and the ridiculously named Nintendo Wii in the frame for launch this year, the pressure is on Sony to produce something rather special.

Information has been hard to come by but finally the mist is clearing. Here’s what we know so far:

It WILL be out this year. November looks favourite (potentially up against the Nintendo Wii) and it will be a worldwide launch including USA and Japan.

It looks reeeeeeealllly cool. Check out the gallery above, but potentially there are three colours and gone is the old box-like black and instead we’ve got sleek and curvy.

The handsets. So far the “kinky banana” handset is all that’s been shown but this is just a prototype. However, they will be wireless.

It’ll have a 60gb hard drive so the possibilities are enormous plus Sony President Ken Kutaragi reckons the PS3 concept is 4D. Whatever that means.

UK allocation could be as low as 75,000 so if you want one, it’ll be wise to pre-order now as you may not see them on the high street before Christmas – perhaps try ebay…

There will be FREE online play - unlike Xbox Live. There will be a massive focus on this aspect including an online service which will promote voice chat, matchmaking lobbies and game, music and movie downloads.

All games will come on high definition Blu-ray disks and the entire back catalogue for PSone and PS2 will be compatible.

What games will be available? On launch we’re expecting Final Fantasy, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Tekken, Ni-Oh and Rainbow Six.

And finally, what’ll it cost? The best guess is it’ll come in at £399! The games meanwhile, could be more like £50. So not cheap...
