Nine years for teenage rapist

A teenager who raped an 11-year-old girl in the toilets of a busy supermarket has been sentenced to nine years in youth custody at Coventry Crown Court.

The 15-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, attacked the girl at a Sainsbury's in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, earlier this year.

He admitted the offence and four further counts of sexual assault during a hearing at Warwick Crown Court in April and was remanded into secure accommodation provided by the local authority.

Sentencing was delayed while reports on the teenager, who lives locally, were completed.

The young victim - whose mother made an anonymous appeal for information following the attack which attracted nationwide publicity - was assaulted in a lavatory cubicle at the store on March 2.

Judge Marten Coates, who described the rape as humiliating and degrading, also sentenced the teenager to four concurrent 18-month custodial terms for other more minor sex attacks committed in the town.

Rewards totalling £30,000 were offered by the supermarket and two national newspapers for information leading to a conviction.

They ought to have taken him back to Sainsbury's Butchers Department and strapped him astride of the Bacon Slicer .. a guaranteed cure to ensure he would not do it again
