Captain Jack turned down by pirate town
Quote:
Despite becoming the world's best loved on-screen pirate Johnny Depp has been denied the freedom of Falmouth, the historic town frequented by real pirates.
The actor, famed for his Captain Jack Sparrow, had personally asked the British coastal town in Cornwall - home to the very first female pirate - whether they could allow him their community's freedom.
However, after much debate they eventually decided to offer Johnny a lesser honour instead.
Local councillor Mike Varney said: "There are many other people who are residents of Falmouth who are more deserving of such an honour."
The town's mayor Roger Bonney supported Johnny request by adding: "This could be really great for Falmouth and could help put us on the map and bring more visitors."
Under old laws of freedom Depp would have the right to park a horse-and-cart outside the Town Hall and drive his sheep on market days.
