Michael Hamer, who was 14 at the time of the attack, admitted murder before the start of his trial at Manchester Crown Court.
Hamer admitted responsibility for killing Joe at an earlier hearing.
A massive search was launched for Joe, a cystic fibrosis sufferer, after he failed to return home from school.
He had left St Gabriel's High in the afternoon and was last seen by fellow pupils on Manchester Road at about 1600 GMT on the day he died.
His worried parents raised the alarm after he failed to return home to be taken to hospital for treatment for his condition.
