Not really sure, dont want to spend too much. Just trying to get peoples opinionms on what is the best level of camera to start with ie how many megapixels. What else do I need to look for?

It all depends on what you will use the camera for (and your price range).
Me, for example : I wanted to take a lot of Landscape shots, but wanted something quick and easy to use, that's also thin for when I go out drinking. (need evidence) So I was williing to spend around £100-£200, mine is an Olympus FE-290. 8 MP, which isn't bad. You are better going to a professional camera shop (independent if poss), just to get some advice. I'd stay away from big name shops, that are after every sale.
