British Gas prices rises have come into effect, pushing gas bills up by 12.4 per cent and electricity bills by 9.4 per cent.
The rises, first announced in July, follow a 22 per cent increase by British Gas in March and have been met with anger from consumer groups.
British Gas said it hoped there would be no further price increases this year but it depended on the cost of wholesale gas.
It also offered some relief for customers with its "fix and fall" offer which fixes energy bills for the next 12 months before reducing them by 5 per cent at the end of 2007.
The suppliers have blamed the soaring cost of wholesale gas they have to buy from abroad to sell on to customers here now that the UK is a net importer of gas.
Consumer groups have warned that energy suppliers must stop charging the poor more for gas and electricity.
A coalition, which includes Energywatch, Help the Aged, Child Action Poverty Group and Citizens Advice, said children living in poverty, the elderly and the disabled were among those suffering most from rocketing prices.

This really annoys me .. just a case of the ' Fat Cats ' getting fatter .. there is no wonder that British gas can announce billions of £'s profit at the end of each year.
Our Government should be putting efforts in to fighting such things as these .. not others Wars !!
I changed my Gas Supplier from British Gas to NPower, and made a saving of £250 per year .. yet they all buy their gas from the same Distribution Agents .. that says it all, imo.
