Epidural drip 'killed' new mother

Just hours after Arnel Cabrera's son Zak was born, his wife Mayra died. She was given an epidural in her arm instead of a saline drip.

It was a fatal mistake compounded by the fact the two infusion bags looked almost identical and were both kept in the same unlocked drawers.

An inquest ruled her death at Swindon's Great Western Hospital in May 2004 was unlawful.

Warnings issued after similar incidents appeared to have gone unheeded.

In 2000 a patient at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital died after an identical mistake.

This tragedy need never have occured, heads will roll for this. But unfortunately it wont bring poor little Zak his mum back.

Carelessness

makes you think when entrusting your life to the healthcare systems

There is no excuse for this carelesness,as a nurse i would always double check everything I administer,only today a relation of mine was given some medication on her discharge from hospital, she would have taken it if i had not looked at what she was given, had she been pregnant and had she taken them they would have killed her unborn baby, her mother died young because of a hospital mistake. Heads will roll tomorrow. there is no excuse.
