Festive drink-drive campaign launched

Quote:

Police will breathalyse a huge number of motorists in the next few weeks as the 30th annual Christmas drink-drive crackdown is launched.

Following last year's festive period campaign, road safety groups called for a tougher stance after nearly 10,000 motorists were caught over the limit.

And the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents renewed calls for the alcohol limit to be cut from 80mg to 50mg.

Launching the campaign in England and Wales, police spokesman on drink-driving and Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police, Meredydd Hughes, said: "December is one of the highest months for both fatalities and collisions involving drunk drivers, while the number of deaths caused by drivers with illegal levels of alcohol has risen over the past few years.

"This is unacceptable and the police will not tolerate it."

Meanwhile, recent research shows one million car drivers expect to climb behind the wheel this Christmas even if they are over the limit, with many thinking this is okay if they can walk straight.

The research, by Churchill Car Insurance, also reveals some alarming tricks to help combat the effects of alcohol while taking to the wheel.

At least three million people believe leaving the windows open while they drive will help them sober up and at least 600,000 think that chewing gum will help them pass a breath test.
This, to me, is the most annoying thing about our Police Force, their Council Tax Rate is raised nearly double, each year, the reason being that they need more money for more Police Officers to patrol the streets, yet we never see these additional ' Beat Officers ' and street crime continues to increase ... but .... they always seem to have ample manpower to continuously harrass the motorist, be it speed traps, breathalysers, road tax, etc.

I, wholeheartedly, do not agree with drink driving, and those caught deserve all they get, but it does get my back up when seeing the time and manpower that our Police Forces are prepared to spend, sat around in Police Cars, waiting to pounce on the motorist, that could be better spent getting out there, on foot, in the streets, where the real crimes are taking place, 24/7

I agree pal, this should happen (you might spill it )
but in all seriousness you should not drive if you even think you are over the limit!

totally agree rocol, we need more beat bobbies not more of these hitlers with their white traffic cop hats. IMO anyone caught drink driving should be locked in a room with the loved ones of people whose lives are cruelly cut short by these idiots
