AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - A burglar who broke into a house in the Dutch town of Tiel on Wednesday night could not resist playing the piano he found there after ransacking the living room, police said on Thursday.

Unfortunately for the 20-year-old thief, his music woke the owner of the house, who called the police.

"The owner didn't register whether the playing was any good or not. He was more worried about the state of his house," a police spokesman said.

MADRID (Reuters) - A Spanish official has been disciplined for allowing four pranksters to sneak into parliament and video themselves pretending to steal the prime minister's chair.

Parliament has also contacted state prosecutors about a spoof video posted on the Internet which showed four hooded figures stealing the chair Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero sits on during debates, it said in a news release on Monday.

"The prime minister's chair is still there," the parliament said, adding that it had disciplined one of its own officials for letting in the pranksters, who had been identified..

BERLIN (Reuters) - A small pile of leftover jelly discarded beside the road after a wedding party caused a large-scale security alert in Germany with biochemical experts, firemen and police called in to investigate.

"Passers-by called police after finding a pool of a flabby red, orange and green substance on the roadside," a police spokesman in the eastern town of Halle told Reuters on Monday.

Fears of toxic waste led to the closure of a wide area after the emergency call on Sunday, and experts wearing chemical warfare suits spent two hours examining the gelatinous substance before deciding that it was -- jelly.


"The fire brigade always has to assume a worst-case scenario," said a fire brigade spokesman. "We conducted a variety of tests and figured out it was jelly."



He said the newly wed groom, who was pulled out of bed at noon following a tipoff, confirmed that the jelly, known as Jell-O in the United States, was a party leftover -- and agreed to clean it up.

LONDON (Reuters) - A British inventor claims to have cracked the age-old problem of how to boil the perfect egg.

Simon Rhymes has devised a machine that uses powerful light bulbs instead of boiling water to cook the egg.

The gadget, which looks like a glass cafetiere, does the job in six minutes and then chops off the top to allow dipping with toast "soldiers".


Rhymes, 23, said he came up with the idea because he found it hard to cook an egg the traditional way.



"Many people are confused," the product design student told BBC radio on Wednesday. "This simply uses four 500-watt bulbs to heat the egg directly."

Rhymes, from Wiltshire, said he has secured a patent and is in talks with manufacturers to mass-produce the machine.

HANOI (Reuters) - A death-row inmate held in solitary confinement in Vietnam for almost a year is pregnant and is seeking a pardon to give birth, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

The Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper quoted a police doctor as saying tests in September confirmed that convicted heroin trafficker Nguyen Thi Oanh, 39, was then 11 weeks pregnant.

The report said it was the first time that a death-row prisoner had become pregnant in Vietnam and that police were investigating how it had happened.

Oanh's husband was serving a jail sentence at another prison in another province, the newspaper said.



Oanh was due to face a firing squad this year after losing her appeal against the death sentence she received last year for possession of a billion dong ($63,000) worth of heroin.

Trafficking more than 600 grams of heroin in Vietnam is punishable by death or life imprisonment.

Police investigators said the father of the unborn child was an inmate who delivered food to death-row prisoners, the Cong An Nhan Dan (People's Police) newspaper said.

The Police Ministry-run newspaper said the guards have been expelled from the police force and detained for 'abusing power' because they let the food deliveryman stay with the inmate in the death-row section of the jail.

Police doctors said tests last month confirmed that convicted heroin trafficker Nguyen Thi Oanh, 39, was then 11 weeks pregnant, while her husband was serving a jail sentence at another prison in another province.



Under Vietnamese law, death sentences for pregnant women must be commuted to life in prison.

Oanh's lawyer, Le Van Kien, was quoted on Friday by state-media as saying it was the first time a death-row prisoner had become pregnant in Vietnam.

Oanh was due to face a firing squad this year after losing her appeal against the death sentence she received last year for possession of one billion dong (34,000 pounds) worth of heroin.
