Open prison record 'unacceptable'

Quote:
More than 4,000 prisoners have gone missing from open prisons in England and Wales in the last five years, it has emerged.
The details came in an official Home Office response to a parliamentary question from shadow home secretary David Davis.
Mr Davis denounced the 4,307 total of absconders - including 693 in 2005/06 alone - as "unacceptable" and said it showed the Government was failing in its duty to protect the public.
"This massive number of absconds is unacceptable and shows that the Government have been consistently failing in their duty to protect the public," said Mr Davis.

"It beggars belief that so many offenders were allowed to walk out of prison over such a long period.

"Coming after the foreign prisoner fiasco, the release of dangerous criminals onto our streets and the chaos in the asylum and immigration service, this is yet another major blow for a department that is proving incapable of doing its job."

The figures come as police reported that convicted burglar Conrad Hogg, 28, had absconded from from Leyhill Open Prison in South Gloucestershire, on Saturday.
Police said Hogg was serving a sentence for burglary and was due to be released later this month.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said: "Hogg is known to have connections in Gloucester and West Mercia and police in those Forces are making their own inquiries there."

The Home Office said: "The nature of open prisons means that we can never guarantee that prisoners will not abscond, but the number of those who do, in relation to the prison population, is now at its lowest level for ten years.

"Over three quarters of those prisoners who have absconded have been re-arrested and returned to custody."

The mind boggles .. what is the point in having them then, imo. ??

Sounds pretty shaky to me. We don't need criminals running around in the streets... prisons are to keep those people locked up, not to let them out.

Someone will have to hunt these guys down and take them out like this:

Yet here i go again sorry Rocol, What the hell are the home office thinking about having open prisions they must have been some financial gain for them to be talked into that one,if you go to prision it should be prision and not a day centre for misbehaved men omg who knows what these men have done who knows what they could do,if you get sent to prision you should be there 24 7

Totally agree, if you do the crime you should do the time and proper time, not time where you have playstations and guards delivering your newspapers etc so prisoners are better off than people who stick by the law
