Star Wars cloak in costume sale
Quote:
The cloak worn by Sir Alec Guinness in Star Wars, along with Madonna's dresses from Evita and several of James Bond's suits are to go under the hammer.
Costumes from productions including the Indiana Jones films, Titanic and Doctor Who will also be auctioned on 6 March.
Some 350 lots are being sold by London-based costume maker Angels.
Bonhams auctioneers said the cloak was expected to surpass its £50,000 reserve price. Guinness, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, died in 2000.
Other highlights include a British army tunic from Zulu, the Batman and Robin suits from Only Fools and Horses and Richard Burton's Roman armour for Cleopatra, which was reused by Sid James in Carry on Cleo.
Bonhams it would be turning into a stars' dressing room, by allowing customers the opportunity to try on selected costumes.
The true value of Guinness's cloak was not appreciated for some years after the film and it was available for hire as part of a monk's costume.
Another surprise was found in the pocket of third Doctor Who John Pertwee's jacket in the form of an original sonic screwdriver - in reality a silver pen with a toothpaste cap glued to it.
Tim Angel, chairman of Angels, explained that while he was sad to see many of the items go, it was an unavoidable decision.
He said: "The flip-side of creating such iconic costumes, that become so very famous and so firmly associated with key movies, is that they can never be used in other films or productions, nor can they be made available from our fancy dress shop.
"With over a century and a half's worth of costumes on the racks, each with ever increasing insurance requirements, and space at a premium, it seemed the right time for us to allow collectors and fans the chance to take home a piece of the movie magic."
