'Wii warm-up' good for surgeons

Playing computer games such as the Nintendo Wii can improve a surgeon's performance in the operating theatre, a US study shows.
Only certain games are effective - those requiring delicate movements.

The fine hand control required to play these games acts as a warm up and hones scalpel skills the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Centre team claim.

Now they are designing Wii software that will accurately simulate surgical procedures, New Scientist reports.

They asked eight trainee surgeons to spend an hour playing the games on a console before performing "virtual reality" surgery on a computer system.

its scary but seems true - ive heard and seen alot about console games helping hand eye co-ordination

I have read about some racecar drivers who are using gaming systems to practice with now---they claim there is alot of realism in the games, yet not as good as being on the track.

I have also heard about the racing drivers getting to know the layout of a track by palying it on a console but I think saying it helps surgeons is a bit too extreme

The only thing I can figure is the hand-eye-cordination stuff that people talk about.

I do alot of weight lifting and I use warm ups to get ready for my "big lifts". Maybe they are using the video games as their warmups.

I can see what they are talking about but imagine if you are the patient lying waiting to go under the knife " sorry Mr Jones your surgery is a bit delayed your surgeon is just finishing his game on the Wii!!!"

Yeah, but I would sure like for him to be practicing on the Wii than trying to figure out what he is doing when he gets to me.
