Evil Dead remake

Sam Raimi Resurrects the Dead

Original Producing Team to Remake Horror Classic The Evil Dead through Ghost House Pictures

“Spider-Man 2” director Sam Raimi and original producing partners Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell (who also starred in the franchise) announced today that they will produce a remake of their cult sensation The Evil Dead through Ghost House Pictures, the joint venture between Raimi, Tapert and Senator International.

Fresh off the heels of Ghost House Pictures’ first horror release -- “The Grudge” which has taken in over $100 million in worldwide box office and opened at #1 in the US and UK, Raimi feels that the time is finally right to remake the beloved, iconic film which launched their careers.

The three producing partners commented, "The remake is a direct result of the enduring popularity of The Evil Dead series. We can't wait to scare a new generation of moviegoers using filmmaking techniques that were not available in 1979."

Senator International President Joe Drake added, "The Evil Dead is such a special film to Sam, Rob, Bruce and horror fans that we are going to take great care in renewing this franchise. By keeping its original formula intact and given audiences’ appetite for horror, we expect that we’ll have a real hit on our hands.”

Raimi wrote, directed and, along with Tapert and Campbell, produced the original horror classic The Evil Dead that tells the story of five twenty-something friends who become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead. An archaeologist's tape recording reveals that the ancient text was discovered among the Khandarian ruins of a Sumerian civilization. Playing the taped incantations, the youths unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival. “The Evil Dead” spawned a franchise with the equally successful installments “Evil Dead II” and “Army of Darkness.”

Ghost House Pictures will immediately begin searching for a director who can incorporate a fresh eye into the film’s original elements. As on all Ghost House Pictures productions, Senator International will fully finance and handle worldwide rights to the film. Senator's Executive Vice President of Motion Pictures, Nathan Kahane will oversee the project for Senator.

Launched in May 2002, Ghost House Pictures is a label dedicated to producing commercial feature films with horror, sci-fi and fantasy themes. In addition to the Evil Dead remake, upcoming Ghost House films include “The Grudge 2,” the recently announced “Dibbuk Box,” the Pang Brothers’ English language directorial debut “Scarecrow” written by Stuart Beattie from an original script by Todd Farmer in association with Blue Star Pictures, “30 Days of Night” in partnership with Columbia Pictures, and “Boogeyman,” a chilling horror film starring Barry Watson, which will be released by Screen Gems in February 2005. The labels first picture “The Grudge,” starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, was released domestically by Columbia Pictures and opened as the number one film in the US and the UK and has crossed $100 million in worldwide box office.

Raimi, director of mega box office hits “Spider-Man” and “Spider-Man 2” is regarded as one of today’s most refreshing and inventive directors with credits that include the Academy Award® nominated “A Simple Plan” and “The Gift” starring Cate Blanchett. Raimi’s partnership with Tapert has spawned such successful feature films as “The Evil Dead” trilogy (“Evil Dead,” “Evil Dead 2” and “Army of Darkness”), “Timecop,” “Hard Target,” Darkman” as well as a body of TV work that includes such hit series as “Xena: Warrior Princess,” “American Gothic” and “Hercules.”

Agree with Crystal, as nothing beats the impact of the originals .. I have all three of the Evil Dead films on DVD .. it will be interesting to see how it looks with modern special effects though ;)
